Product Care
Kia Ora! at PEREHANA, we want you to maximise the lifespan of your clothes. Check out our handy product care tips that can help you do just that, while also reducing any environmental impact. Our clothes are designed for easy living wear them, wash them, and enjoy them with very little fuss!
1. CLOTHING
These are our product care symbols found on our clothing. They are printed on the back side of our clothing label/tag, inside the clothing.
Handwash vs. Machine Wash
We recommend handwashing or machine washing your clothing in cold water.
Hang Dry vs. Machine Dry
Hang drying your clothing is more relaxed and kinder to the material of your clothing. If you need your clothing in a hurry, tumble dry it on a low heat setting.
Line dry your clothing whenever possible. Line drying saves energy and reduces environmental impact.
Iron
If you are going to iron your clothing, do so using a low heat setting. If your clothing has a printed design, you may want to put a piece of material like a towel between the clothing and the iron. Ironing directly onto the printed designs may affect the design structure.
Do Not Bleach
For long lasting wearable quality, we recommended you do not use bleach on your clothing. Bleach weakens fabric blends in clothing and fades colours. Clothes become dull, causing patchy white marks potentially shortening the clothing's durability.
Other
Detergent
Use a mild non toxic, biodegradable detergent, it's better for you, your clothing and the environment.
Fabric Softener & Dry Sheet
We don't recommend using fabric softeners and dry sheets, both release waxy agents on the fabric. This coating may reduce the life of your clothing and affect the material blends of the clothing.
General Tips
- For best results turn clothing inside out before washing or drying.
- Wash similar coloured clothing and or fabrics together too
- We recommend that you do not bleach or dry clean your clothing
Kakahu (Contemporary Māori Cloaks)
Receiving Your Kahu Huruhuru
- Your kahu huruhuru will arrive rolled up or both sides folded inwards and overlapping the other to protect the feathers.
- Upon receiving your kahu huruhuru, please verify that you've received the correct order.
- Unroll or unfold your kahu huruhuru
- There may be loose feathers, with kahu huruhuru that incorporate feathers this may occur.
Storing Your Kahu Huruhuru
- We recommend storing your kahu huruhuru in a dust proof garment bag on a clip hanger.
- For optimal storage, fold the kahu huruhuru lengthwise with both sides folded inwards and overlapping. Secure the folds with a clip hanger before placing it in the garment bag. Ideally, store the bag in a wardrobe where the kahu huruhuru can hang full length and uncompressed.
- Avoid storing your kahu huruhuru in a plastic cover. Feathers need to breathe and air out.
How Your Kahu Huruhuru is Made
Our kahu huruhuru are crafted with locally sourced New Zealand materials, including fabric and feathers. The feathers are carefully sewn onto ribbons, which are then attached to the fabric base. Tanniko bands are directly sewn onto the fabric for added beauty and structure.
We recommended you keep your kahu huruhuru away from direct sunlight and rain. Sunlight can cause the feathers to sweat, while rain can damage the fabric and the delicate feather barbs.
2. JEWELLERY
Our jewellery at PEREHANA is made with love from us to you. With proper care your jewellery can continue to shine for years to come. The more intentional you are about caring for your jewellery, the longer it will last.
Proactive maintenance is the easiest way to care for your jewellery. Avoid or remove all jewellery before any situation or activity that risks your jewellery being damaged or scratched by rough surfaces.
Cleaning Jewellery
- Regularly cleaning your pieces helps to avoid the residue buildup that can dull the original shine.
- For light cleaning, you can wipe your jewellery with a damp cloth. For tougher dirt, a gentle soap and water solution followed by a dry buffing with a soft cloth should do the trick.
- If you really want to be a flash guy get your hands on a jewellery care kit and follow the care kit instructions.
Storing Jewellery
- When not being worn, store in a safe, cool and dry place from direct sunlight to protect against the elements of daily exposure.
- Store pieces separately to avoid damage.
- Make sure your pieces are completely dry before storing them.
- Certain metals, like vermeil and sterling silver, can be prone to tarnishing. We recommend storing your pieces in a lined microsuede fabric jewellery box. Yeah that's sounds pretty flash but definitely helps the care and cleaning of them more easier.
Polymer Clay
Many of our jewellery pieces are handcrafted from lightweight, durable polymer clay. This makes them comfortable to wear, especially for earrings, larger necklaces or pendants. While polymer clay can withstand everyday wear and tear, gentle handling will ensure its longevity. Our hypoallergenic polymer clay jewellery is perfect for those with sensitive skin.
More Tips
- Avoid Excessive Bending and Twisting: Gentle handling will help maintain the piece's shape.
